Sugar Plum Fairy

The Hansen family tradition of going to the Nutcracker every Christmas is continuing strong in the Davis family. This year Lucy and Peter came for the first year ever. Sweet Mimi really wanted to take Lucy because Lucy is a self-proclaimed ballerina after taking ballet classes for three months. Peter decided he wanted to go if Lucy was going. Poor Adam was the only one not there because he felt giving service during the Christmas Season was important so he directed parking at the Temple Visitor's Center that night. Lucy was so excited. We got her a special sugar plum fairy outfit to wear, including a crown. We had been reading a Nutcracker storybook and listening to the music so they were prepped. Maybe a little too much. Lucy gave a running commentary through the first Act. "Clara is going to get a Nutcracker for Christmas," "The Nutcracker is going to get big and fight the Mouse King," "The Nutcracker is going to beat the Mouse King." The fighting scene freaked her out, but Peter was way into it. When intermission started, I turned to Lucy with a big smile and was surprised to see her bottom lip poking out. "What'swrong?" I asked. "The Sugar Plum Fairy didn't come,"she cried. I then explained intermission. Lucy loved the Oriental dancers, thought the Arabian dancer (always my favorite) was 'immodest' in her mid-drif, and was totally surprised when children came out of Mother Buffon's skirt. Peter and Lucy got a bit bored during the second scene towards the end, Peter kept repeating,"When is this going to be over?"But when it was over he said he wanted to go next year again. Great. Maybe we'll let Adam come next year too.
